Because food is really good.

Grocery Shopping

All grocery stores now offer an array of meat-free items. Even Walmart carries vegan chorizo and meat-free chicken patties, among other products! Safeway, Costco, Harris Teeter, Giant Eagle and probably any other mainstream grocery store you go to will also carry these types of items.

If you’re looking for a more extensive selection, try Mom’s Organic Market (5273 Buckeystown Pike), which has one of the best selection of mock meats and dairy alternatives in the DC-Baltimore-Frederick area.

The Common Market Co-op (5728 Buckeystown Pike)—in addition to also carrying a great selection of vegan foods—also has a “hot bar” full of vegetarian and vegan items. And it’s cooperatively-run!

Wegman’s (which recently opened at 7830 Wormans Mill Road) also has a huge selection of mock meats and other great vegan foods. It even boasts a fully-vegetarian food bar!

Asian Super Market (467 W Patrick St., # 10) is also a great place for meat-free items. Look closely at the shelf by the noodles before you get to the produce…it is full of mock meat products.  You may not notice this on your first trip to the store because the shelves are very densely packed.  But look closely and you’ll be pleased to find a whole section of seitan and other gluten- and soy-based faux meats.  The can of “braised gluten” (seitan tidbits) called curry cha’i pow yu ($1.99) and a can of veggie mock chicken ($1.59) are especially good.

Happy shopping!
